Siemens selects SUSE Linux software system to enhance MRI products

Novell and Concurrent announced that Siemens Medical Solutions, a developer of MRI technology and applications, has selected SUSE Linux enterprise real time operating system and NightStar application development tools for its Magnetom magnetic resolution imaging (MRI) products.

SUSE Linux enterprise real time is built on top of the SUSE Linux enterprise 10 platform from Novell and has been extended with real-time computing capabilities from Concurrent. As a result, it is an integrated application, which is sold and supported jointly by Concurrent and Novell.

Siemens Medical Solutions' Magnetom family of MRI systems are designed to fit into modern health management. The system features multichannel imaging, which allows simultaneous placement of up to four coils. With more and more applications calling for higher resolution images, ultra-high-field MRI technology has become compulsory for medical institutions.

SUSE Linux Enterprise Real Time offers support for 32-bit and 64-bit processor architectures (Intel Xeon and AMD Opteron), guaranteed interrupt response time of less than 30 microseconds, high-resolution timer support for enhanced scheduling, user-level control of hyperthreading, and processor shielding, all within a single programming environment API. The proven real-time technology eliminates spikes in latency, ensuring consistent performance and stability.

Siemens Medical Solutions of Siemens AG (SI) with headquarters in Malvern, Pennsylvania, and Erlangen, Germany, is a supplier to the healthcare industry. The company employs approximately 33,000 people worldwide and operating in more than 120 countries.
