OLPC begins laptop mass production

One Laptop per Child has begun mass production.

The nonprofit organization, launched in 2005 by MIT professor Nicholas Negroponte, began mass production of the XO laptop computer yesterday morning at Quanta Computer Inc.'s new manufacturing facility in Changshu, China, two hours northwest of Shanghai.

One Laptop per Child, which is dedicated to providing children in developing countries with affordable computers, is manufacturing rugged laptops designed to withstand heavy rains in the rainforest, the heat of the desert and a 5-foot fall.
